Rochester Chip is a monthly series of events dedicated to promoting artists and groups who use the sound chips of retro computers and video game consoles to create new original music. This exciting and often experimental form of electronic music repurposes devices such as Nintendo Gameboys and Atari 2600s as synthesizers and sequencers to create exciting new compositions in a wide array of genres.

DANIMAL CANNON is like a government stimulus check that gives you ice cream sandwiches made out of guitar solos. Can you really afford to pass that up? Didn’t think so.

FAKING AMNESIA makes chiptune music with two original Gameboys, and Little Sound DJ.

CHIP’S CHALLENGE uses modded PSPs emulating LSDJ to get that rich, creamy flavor.
https://www.facebook.com/chipschallengeband

SBTHREE makes weird music with his dad’s saxophone and a gameboy he bought at a garage sale.

VJ PLZ accompanies DJs and Bands with live mixes and manipulations of Twitter feeds, abstract effects, vintage video, internet memes, music videos, and custom sound-triggered animated DJ logos.

Two years ago, Rochester Chip was just an idea, an idea inspired by the vibrant scenes of larger cities. Why couldn’t Rochester have that too? On November 11th, 2010, we had the first Rochester Chip show and since then we’ve set up 25 monthly events with over 80 different performers.

This December, WITR is helping us celebrate two years of chip music in Rochester with the ROCHESTER CHIP FEST, a day long chip music festival featuring nine bands / performers, three visualists, workshops, and more. This is an event you don’t want to miss!

For everyone who came to Rochester Chip 24 last weekend: thanks a lot! We had fun playing Creed songs into the night! SBThree, Faking Amnesia, and Danimal Cannon were all awesome as well of course!

Looking ahead, we have another show this Wednesday at the Tala Vera with The Dead Love Society and Folkfaces so that should be fun! We’ll have One Bit Wonder CDs! Come check it out!

Chip's Challenge New Year Update

It’s a new (school) year and new things are in the works with Chip’s Challenge!

The first big change is the launch of our newly redesigned website, which you can check out at chipschallengeband.com! You can consider this the central hub of everything Chip’s Challenge from here on out. There you can easily keep up to date with everything going on at Chip’s Challenge, with links to our Facebook page, Twitter profile, and Tumblr posts, as well as a Bandcamp player, band bio, and info about upcoming shows!

Speaking of upcoming shows… Chip’s Challenge has several shows coming up in October! The first is on October 16th at the Bug Jar with Geronimo and Anchorage, Nebraska (FB event)! We’ll be playing hard and fast to keep up with these grunge rockers! The second is Rochester Chip 24 on October 27th. More details will be announced closer to the date of the show! We will also have CDs of our first full-length album, 1bit Wonder, available for the first time in the real world at our upcoming shows for the low, low price of $5! Supplies are limited so act fast! We have more shows lined up for the upcoming months, and we will announce those as the dates draw nearer.

Next up, Chip’s Challenge has just unveiled our first music video, for our song One More Step! You can watch it at YouTube or right below this paragraph! It’s a compilation of footage shot in May just before our van was destroyed. The video is dedicated to its memory. RIP The Tank.

Chip’s Challenge was also recently included on an 8-bit Beastie Boys tribute album dedicated to the memory of MCA. You can find the album for free download here at Bandcamp. Our track is #2, a chiptune rearrangement of the classic Beastie Boys hit, No Sleep Til Brooklyn!

And lest you think we couldn’t possibly have any more announcements, we’re in the process of writing and recording new music! We’re currently recording some older tracks that weren’t ready in time for the 1bit Wonder recording sessions. These tracks include ones you may have heard at past shows or on our YouTube channel, such as Beyond the Heliosphere and We Are Chip’s Challenge. We are also working on writing new material for a brand-new full-length album! Please look forward to more announcements in the future!

Thank you for all your support along the way!

<3 Chip’s Challenge
